Below, check out a list of the best smartphones that will be available in 2018.

Apple’s iPhone line basically invented, reinvented, and perfected the smartphone. With each successive iteration, the iPhone gets better and better. And, while it’s only been a few months since the unbelievably cool iPhone X hit store shelves, rumors and reports abound that 2018 will see even more new versions of the newest and best iPhones offering.

Currently, the top of the line iPhone is the X, a 5.8” OLED model which features a full-screen design and True-Depth camera features like Face ID, animoji, and the new selfie portrait mode. In its 2018 iPhone product mix forecast, KGI Securities suggested that there will be two more iPhone X models next year: a larger, 6.5” OLED model and a 6.1” LCD model, both of which will also feature full-screen design and TrueDepth camera tech.

The iPhone X is currently Apple’s flagship phone product. A base model iPhone X currently retails for $999, but analysts expect cost of the “basic” iPhone X (the 5.8” OLED) to drop when the newer models hit the market.

SAMSUNG

Samsung’s Galaxy line are among the best-known and best-selling smartphones in the world. Its newest pièce-de-résistance, the Galaxy S9, will likely hit markets in early 2018, and so far, it looks like it will be one of the year’s best handsets.

Whenever it is released, the Galaxy S9 will become Samsung’s flagship product offering. Early rumors suggest a price point at around $725, or almost $300 less than the iPhone X. While technical specs on the S9 aren’t currently confirmed, the leading rumors suggest that the S9 will boast a Snapdragon 845 chipset (and, in some non-U.S. parts of the world, an Exynos 9810 chipset) and will have an LTE modem that supports the fastest (theoretical) download speeds in mobile phone history: a lightning-fast 1.2 Gbps. Where RAM is concerned, the Galaxy S9 is rumored to have a relatively modest 4 GB of onboard memory. Design heads will likely be happy to hear that the hot gossip suggests the S9 will have a very small bezel, while security-conscious users may be interested to know that the S9 is likely to have a fingerprint sensor just below the exterior glass.

GOOGLE PIXEL

For a lot of people, the Pixel is the perfect combination of great hardware and a reasonable price. The 2017 Pixel and Pixel 2 XL were among the best phones on the market in 2017. Not much is known about the forthcoming Pixel 3, but early rumors suggest that there could be three different Pixel 3 offerings on the market in 2018, i.e. two premium phones and a high-end, extra-expensive one. The rumored codenames for the three devices are Albacore, Blueline, and Crosshatch.

Regardless of the exact specs, many have surmised that the Pixel is meant to be an iPhone killer. To compete with the iPhone X, the forthcoming Pixel model (or models) will have to compete with a pretty fantastic product that, for some, is prohibitively expensive. This is likely where the Pixel line will make up some ground on Apple.

The base Pixel model will likely be priced in the $650 range, which looks very, very good when compared to the iPhone X, especially when you consider that the Google Pixel 3 looks like it may very well be a full-screen phone, suggesting that it may mimic some of the most prominent design and software features available on the iPhone X.

Though the main in-market competition in the smartphone world seems to be between giants like Apple, Google, and Samsung, commercials can be misleading, and lead you to falsely believe that it’s a two- or three-company race. In actual fact, there are many different companies (including LG, OnePlus, and old kids on the block like Nokia and Motorola) making fantastic products these days, and we shouldn’t let the giants of the scene obscure them from view.
